Are Adaptogens Nootropics? The Overlap Explained
Are adaptogens nootropics? Sometimes, in the way a plant can sit in two shops. A nootropic is a substance meant to help thinking and memory, and Malik's 2022 review counts plant extracts among them. Adaptogens are plants sold for stress. The label depends on how a seller markets the plant.

The overlap01
Are adaptogens nootropics?
Adaptogens are not automatically nootropics, but a plant can be sold as both. The two words are marketing and review categories, not legal ones.
Malik's 2022 review describes nootropics as substances intended to help thinking, learning and memory, and it includes plants and plant extracts (Malik 2022, Nootropics review). The summary we read does not define adaptogens.
So the overlap sits in plant products, where the same extract can be listed under stress or under memory depending on the shop.
Side by side02
What is the difference between adaptogens and nootropics?
The difference between adaptogens and nootropics is the target. Adaptogens are pitched at stress. Nootropics are pitched at thinking.
| Question | Nootropic | Adaptogen |
|---|---|---|
| Pitched at | Thinking, learning, memory (Malik 2022, Nootropics review) | Stress and tiredness (seller wording) |
| Source types | Compounds, metabolism boosters, cholinergic agents, plants (Malik 2022, Nootropics review) | Plants |
| Proof for memory | No supplement conclusive (NCCIH, Supplements and cognition) | Not covered in our sources |
| Who regulates claims | FDA does not approve either before sale (FDA, Dietary supplements Q and A) | Same rules |
A real example03
Is rhodiola an adaptogen or a nootropic?
Rhodiola is a plant often named in this debate. We have no cited source that tests it for memory, so we will not grade it.
This is the useful habit: when a plant carries two names, ask for the trial, the dose and the form. If none is shown, the label is a story.
- Ask which study used the same dose
- Ask whether the amount is printed
- Check for interactions with your medicines (NIH ODS, Supplements: What to know)

Is Synaptril an adaptogen or a nootropic?
Neither word appears on the Synaptril label. It is called a dietary supplement with "Advanced Brain Support*".
Its six blend ingredients include plant extracts (butcher's broom and turmeric), but butcher's broom has vein-health research, not cognition data (MSKCC, Butcher's broom). The nootropics vs adaptogens guide goes deeper, and the guides hub lists the rest.
Safety05
Are herbal products safe because they are natural?
No. Natural does not always mean safe (NIH ODS, Supplements: What to know). Turmeric products, for example, have been linked to liver injury (LiverTox, Turmeric).
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a doctor before adding a plant product if you are pregnant, nursing or under 18.
FAQ06
Adaptogen and nootropic questions
Who invented the word adaptogen?
Our sources do not say, so we will not guess. What we can confirm is that Malik's review of nootropics gives no definition of adaptogens (Malik 2022, Nootropics review). Treat it as an informal market term.
Do adaptogens work for memory?
We cite no study showing it. NIH finds no supplement with conclusive evidence for preventing cognitive decline (NCCIH, Supplements and cognition). A plant pitched at stress may still be tried, but the memory claim is a hope, not a result.
Can a product be both an adaptogen and a nootropic?
In marketing, yes. A seller can list one plant extract under both headings. No official body we cite uses either word to approve a product, and FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Dietary supplements Q and A).
Is turmeric an adaptogen?
We have no source that calls it one. NCCIH says there is not enough evidence to conclude turmeric helps any health purpose, and high-absorption products have been linked to liver injury (NCCIH, Turmeric). See the turmeric page for details.
How do I tell a real nootropic claim from marketing?
Look for a printed amount, a trial on that amount, and a repeat result. Harvard Health says makers may claim support but not protection from disease, and FDA does not verify ingredient accuracy (Harvard Health, Brain supplements).
Does Synaptril contain any adaptogen?
No ingredient on the label is called an adaptogen by any source we cite. It lists magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10. Read each one on the ingredients page.
