CoQ10 for Brain Fog: The Smallest Line in Synaptril
Coenzyme Q10 is a compound your cells use to make energy, and the case for CoQ10 for brain fog is unsettled: four of eight small cognition trials found a benefit and four did not. In Synaptril it is listed last of six in the 575 mg blend, as ubiquinone, so a capsule likely holds under 35 mg. It may counteract warfarin.

The basics01
What is coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a fat-soluble compound that is part of the chain cells use to make energy. The body makes its own, and supplements sell it mostly as ubiquinone.
Much of the research on it is about the heart. NCCIH calls the results for heart disease and heart failure inconclusive, and a large NIH-funded study found it did not help early Parkinson's disease (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
The Synaptril label lists "Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone)". It is the sixth and last name in the proprietary blend, which means it weighs the least of the six.
| Name on the label | Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Ubiquinone, made in the body |
| Place on the label | 6 of 6 in the 575 mg proprietary blend |
| Amount per capsule | Not listed; #6 of 6 in the 575 mg blend, so at most 96 mg, and likely under 35 mg |
| Amount used in research | Doses differ across eight small trials |
| Strength of evidence | Mixed: 4 of 8 small trials found a benefit |
| Marketed or traditional use | Part of the cell's energy chain |
| Main caution | May counteract warfarin; may interact with insulin. |
Evidence02
Does CoQ10 for brain fog have evidence behind it?
Not enough to say yes. No trial we can cite studied CoQ10 for brain fog itself, and the cognition trials that exist split down the middle.
A 2025 review found eight human trials of CoQ10 and thinking. Four reported a benefit and two found more blood flow to the brain. The rest found no gain. The authors blamed different test methods and different CoQ10 preparations, and said more research is needed (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition).
Larger trials have been less kind. MSKCC notes no benefit in Parkinson's or Huntington's disease, and an antioxidant mix that included CoQ10 did not help Alzheimer's disease (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
| Source | What was looked at | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Nankivell 2025 review (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition) | 8 trials of cognition, 2 in healthy people | 4 found a benefit; results mixed |
| MSKCC (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10) | Larger trials in Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's | No benefit found |
| NCCIH (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) | Heart, statin muscle pain, Parkinson's | Inconclusive or no help; memory not discussed |
| Synaptril | The finished capsule | Not studied |
Brain fog03
What usually causes brain fog?
Brain fog is a cluster of symptoms, such as forgetfulness, slow thinking and losing your train of thought. It is usually temporary and often has an everyday cause (Cleveland Clinic, Brain fog).
Cleveland Clinic lists short sleep, poor nutrition, stress and hormone shifts such as pregnancy or menopause. Diabetes or low blood sugar, anxiety, depression, ADHD, long COVID and chemotherapy can play a part too (Cleveland Clinic, Brain fog).
A capsule cannot fix any of those. If fog gets in the way of daily life, such as missing appointments often, see a provider. The longer list is on brain fog causes.
Check sleep
Adults need 7 or more hours a night (CDC, About Sleep).
Check medicines
Some prescriptions affect memory; ask your pharmacist (MedlinePlus, Memory loss).
Get tested
A doctor can look at thyroid, B12 and blood sugar (MedlinePlus, Memory loss).
Doing the math04
How much CoQ10 is in a Synaptril capsule?
The label hides it, but CoQ10 is the smallest of the six. Its ceiling is about 96 mg, and a generous estimate puts it under 35 mg.
The research gives no single target dose to compare with, because the eight trials used different amounts and preparations (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition). What the label does let us do is set limits, step by step.
- Step 1: label order
Blend ingredients run from most to least by weight (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36). Sixth place means no more than a sixth of 575 mg, so about 96 mg.
- Step 2: the magnesium
Pure magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium (Magnesium glycinate, Mg content). The printed 80 mg of magnesium then needs about 570 mg of it, leaving roughly 8 mg for five ingredients.
- Step 3: a generous case
If the glycinate is a buffered grade at 20% magnesium, it weighs 400 mg. The other five share 175 mg, and CoQ10, being last, can hold at most about 35 mg.
The 20% grade is our assumption, chosen to be kind to the formula. It is not a published number. See all six lines on the ingredients page.

Does CoQ10 interact with medicines?
Yes. CoQ10 may counteract the blood thinner warfarin and may interact with insulin, so ask your doctor before taking it with either (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
CoQ10 is shaped much like vitamin K, which is why it can work against warfarin (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). As an antioxidant, it may also make chemotherapy and radiation less effective. It may slow how fast the body clears theophylline, an asthma drug (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
Statins work the other way: they can lower the body's own CoQ10. Even so, NCCIH finds the evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
Warfarin
CoQ10 may counteract it (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). Clotting tests may need closer watching.
Theophylline and statins
Slower theophylline clearance; statins lower CoQ10 levels (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
Never stop, skip or change a prescription, a blood thinner above all, because of a supplement. Bring the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist instead.
Side effects06
What side effects can CoQ10 cause?
CoQ10 side effects are usually mild: trouble sleeping and digestive upset are the most common. NCCIH says no serious side effects have been reported (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
MSKCC adds nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite to the list (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). At the small amount a Synaptril capsule can hold, these are less likely, but the other five ingredients carry their own effects. The whole formula is covered on Synaptril side effects.
- Sleeplessness
- Nausea, diarrhea or stomach upset
- Loss of appetite
Our read07
Is the CoQ10 in Synaptril worth paying for?
Not on its own. It is the lightest line in a small blend, and the research on CoQ10 and thinking is mixed even at full doses.
For most people the bigger question is the warfarin flag. If you take a blood thinner, settle that with your doctor before ordering. The label's other limits, and who the capsule suits, are on who Synaptril is for.
FAQ08
CoQ10 questions, answered
What is CoQ10 and why do cells need it?
CoQ10 is a compound the body makes that forms part of the chain cells use to turn food into energy. It is fat-soluble, and most supplements sell it as ubiquinone, the form Synaptril lists. Research on topping it up has given mixed results (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
Do CoQ10 levels drop with age?
Our sources give no figures for age, so we cannot put a number on it. They do say statin drugs can lower the body's own CoQ10 (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). If you are worried about your levels, a doctor is the right person to ask.
What does "as ubiquinone" mean on the label?
It names the form of CoQ10 in the capsule. Ubiquinone is the standard supplement form. The label names no special absorption-boosting preparation, and the 2025 review notes that how well a CoQ10 preparation is absorbed differs between products (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition).
Can CoQ10 help with tiredness or low energy?
There is no good evidence that it does for everyday tiredness. NCCIH does not list fatigue among its findings (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10), and the cognition trials were mixed (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition). Ongoing tiredness has many causes worth checking with a doctor first.
Should people taking statins consider CoQ10?
Talk to your doctor first. Statins can lower the body's CoQ10 (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10), but NCCIH says the overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Keep taking the statin as prescribed.
Is CoQ10 better taken with food?
CoQ10 is fat-soluble, so many people take it with a meal. The Synaptril label sets no rule about food or time of day. Taking your one capsule with the same meal each day also makes it easier to remember.
Can CoQ10 affect sleep?
It can. Sleeplessness, or insomnia, is one of the side effects listed by both NCCIH and MSKCC (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). If it starts after a new supplement, stop and mention it to your doctor.
