Brain Supplement Market: How Products Are Made
The brain supplement market is a crowded field of capsules, gummies and powders, many made by contract factories and sold under a brand name. A brand and a maker can be different companies. The label shows the distributor, and often nothing about who made the product.

The short answer01
How is the brain supplement market organized?
The brain supplement market has three layers: ingredient suppliers, contract manufacturers and brands. A brand may own none of the factory work.
Roughly one in four adults over 50 takes a supplement for brain health (Harvard Health, Brain supplements). That demand draws many sellers.
We have no sales figures or market share data, so we state none. What we can describe is how the products reach the shelf, and who is named on the label. Our look at the capsule's own maker question is on who makes Synaptril.
Making02
How does white-label manufacturing work for a focus supplement brand?
White-label manufacturing means a factory makes a product to a set recipe, and a brand puts its own label on it.
The brand can change the name, the bottle and the claims. It may adjust the formula. The firm that sells the product is responsible for it being safe and honestly described, and FDA does not approve it first (FDA, Dietary supplements Q and A).
- Recipe
A stock or custom blend is chosen.
- Production
A contract factory fills capsules and bottles them.
- Label
The brand adds its name, panel and claims.
- Sale
The brand sells online, in stores or by phone.
This is how the industry works in general. We do not say it describes Synaptril, whose bottle names no maker.
Differences03
How do brain supplement brands differ on the label?
Brands differ on form, dose detail and disclosure. The label is where you can see it.
| Product | Form | Amounts printed |
|---|---|---|
| Synaptril | 1 capsule a day | Magnesium 80 mg; blend of 575 mg with no single amounts |
| Neuriva Original | 1 capsule | Coffee fruit extract 100 mg; phosphatidylserine 100 mg |
| Prevagen Regular | 1 capsule a day | Apoaequorin 10 mg |
| Dynamic Brain | 2 capsules a day | Vitamins plus a 745 mg blend with no single amounts |

What should buyers watch for in brain supplement marketing?
Watch the claims. Regulators have acted against memory claims before: FDA sent 12 warning letters over Alzheimer's claims in 2019 (FDA 2019, Alzheimer's claims action).
The FTC and New York also took Prevagen's maker to court, and the 2024 verdict found the memory claims lacked support (FTC and NY v. Quincy (Prevagen)).
Brand marketing is not evidence. No supplement has conclusive support for preventing cognitive decline (NCCIH, Supplements and cognition).
Do not change it because of a supplement.
FAQ05
Brain supplement market questions
What is a contract manufacturer in the supplement industry?
It is a factory that makes products for other brands. The brand supplies the name and sales, the factory supplies capsules, blending and packing. A label may not name the factory, so ask the seller who made the product.
Does a made-in-USA seal mean the product is high quality?
No. A seal is a claim about where something was made, not how well. For Synaptril, the bottle prints no country of manufacture. Look for named testing, a lot number and a lab report instead.
Why do so many brain supplements use similar ingredients?
Suppliers sell the same ingredients to many brands, and buyers know names like bacopa, phosphatidylserine and L-theanine. Look at the amounts. Two bottles with the same ingredient list can hold very different doses.
Is the brain supplement market regulated?
Lightly. FDA does not approve supplements before sale. Makers must follow manufacturing rules and keep claims truthful, and the FTC watches advertising. Problems usually surface after sale, through complaints or warning letters.
What does proprietary blend mean on a label?
It means the maker lists the blend's total weight and its ingredients in order, but not each amount. Federal rules allow it (eCFR, 21 CFR 101.36). The first ingredient listed is the heaviest and the last is the lightest.
How can I find out who makes a supplement?
Check the label for a manufacturer line, the box and the brand's website. Call the support number and ask. If nobody will say, treat the missing name as a gap and weigh it in your decision.
