CoQ10 and Statins: Should You Supplement?
CoQ10 and statins are linked because statins can lower the body's own CoQ10 levels. That does not prove a supplement helps. NCCIH says the overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin-related muscle pain. If you take a statin, keep taking it and ask your doctor before adding CoQ10.

The short answer01
Why are CoQ10 and statins linked?
Statins can lower the body's own CoQ10 levels, which is why the two are often discussed together (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
CoQ10 is a compound the body makes and uses in energy production. A lower blood level sounds like a reason to replace it, but a lower level is not the same as a proven need.
Statins are prescribed to protect the heart. Never stop one because of a supplement or a headline. Keep taking prescribed medicine and raise any muscle ache with your doctor.
The evidence02
Does CoQ10 help with statin side effects?
The evidence does not support it. NCCIH says the overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin-related muscle pain (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
Research on CoQ10 for heart disease prevention and heart failure is also inconclusive. A large NIH-funded study found it did not improve early Parkinson's symptoms, even at higher doses (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
For thinking, an analysis of 8 trials gave mixed results (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition). No source we use says CoQ10 helps memory.
| Question | Finding |
|---|---|
| Statins lower body CoQ10? | Yes, per MSKCC (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10) |
| Helps statin muscle pain? | Evidence does not support it (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) |
| Helps heart disease? | Inconclusive (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) |
| Helps thinking? | Mixed across 8 trials (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition) |
Safety03
Is CoQ10 safe to take with a statin?
No serious side effects have been reported for CoQ10 itself. Mild ones can include insomnia and digestive upset (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
The drug clashes are elsewhere. CoQ10 may interact with warfarin and insulin, and may not suit some cancer treatments (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). MSKCC adds that it may slow clearance of theophylline (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). Its page does not address blood pressure drugs.
A statin often comes with other medicines. Give the pharmacist every name so they can check CoQ10 against each.

How much CoQ10 is in Synaptril?
The label does not say. Coenzyme Q10, listed as ubiquinone, is last in the 575 mg blend, so it holds at most 96 mg per capsule.
The real figure is lower. Pure magnesium glycinate alone likely takes about 570 mg, and even in a generous case of 400 mg it leaves CoQ10 at most 35 mg. That 20% case is our assumption, not a published number.
Label order only sets ceilings. A fair summary: the amount is small and unknown, so Synaptril should not be viewed as a way to replace CoQ10 lost to a statin.
If you take a statin, the label asks you to consult a physician. See the CoQ10 page and supplements and medicines.
FAQ05
CoQ10 and statin questions
Do statins really lower CoQ10?
Yes. Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that statins can lower the body's own CoQ10 levels (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). What that means for health is a separate question, and NCCIH finds the evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin muscle pain.
Can CoQ10 stop statin muscle aches?
The evidence does not support it (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). If statin muscle pain bothers you, tell your doctor. They may adjust the dose or try a different statin. Do not stop the statin on your own.
What is ubiquinone?
Ubiquinone is the oxidized form of coenzyme Q10, and the form printed on Synaptril's label. Another form, ubiquinol, also exists. Our sources do not compare their effects, so the label form alone tells you little.
Does CoQ10 interact with blood thinners?
It may. NCCIH says it may interact with warfarin (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10), and MSKCC says it may counteract it (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). Anyone on warfarin should ask a doctor before taking CoQ10 or Synaptril.
Is there proof CoQ10 helps memory?
No. An analysis of 8 trials found mixed results on thinking (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition), and NCCIH's page does not discuss memory. Synaptril's memory claims are the maker's, marked with an asterisk on the label.
Should I take CoQ10 at the same time as my statin?
Our sources give no timing rule for it. Ask your pharmacist. Take the statin exactly as prescribed, and tell your doctor about any supplement so they can watch for effects.
