Curcumin Bioavailability: Why Absorption Matters
Curcumin bioavailability is low: the body absorbs plain curcumin poorly. In one human test, a 2 g dose alone gave undetectable or very low blood levels. Piperine from black pepper raised levels sharply. Synaptril lists turmeric extract at 95% curcuminoids and does not list piperine.

The short answer01
What is curcumin bioavailability?
Curcumin bioavailability is how much curcumin actually reaches your blood after you swallow it. For plain curcumin, that amount is very small.
In human volunteers, a 2 g dose of curcumin alone gave undetectable or very low blood levels (AARM, Piperine and curcumin). A big dose on the label can still mean little in the body.
NCCIH adds that curcumin content varies between products and that some add piperine to improve absorption (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Enhancers02
Does piperine improve turmeric absorption?
Yes, in one human test. Adding 20 mg of piperine raised curcumin blood concentrations by 2000 percent (AARM, Piperine and curcumin).
That result is from a 1998 study cited by a restorative-medicine monograph. It shows a lab effect, not a health benefit.
| Point | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Curcumin alone, 2 g | Undetectable or very low blood levels (AARM, Piperine and curcumin) |
| Plus 20 mg piperine | Blood levels up 2000 percent (AARM, Piperine and curcumin) |
| Piperine and medicines | May raise levels of phenytoin, propranolol, theophylline (AARM, Piperine and curcumin) |
| High-absorption products | Liver damage reported in some users (NCCIH, Turmeric) |

What does the Synaptril label say about turmeric?
The label lists turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizome extract 95% curcuminoids, fifth in a 575 mg blend. It lists no piperine and no special absorption form.
Fifth place caps the extract at 115 mg. With magnesium glycinate likely taking most of the weight, a generous case caps it near 44 mg. Compare that with the 180 mg a day of a high-absorption form in a 2018 trial (Small 2018, Curcumin memory RCT).
The label has no food rule, and our sources do not say whether food changes absorption of this extract. See the turmeric page.

Is better curcumin absorption always better?
No. Higher absorption can raise risk as well as levels. NCCIH says some people taking highly bioavailable curcumin products had liver damage (NCCIH, Turmeric).
- Warning signs: fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, dark urine, jaundice (NCCIH, Turmeric).
- If they appear, stop the product and contact a provider.
- Turmeric supplements may be unsafe in pregnancy (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Never stop a prescription because of a supplement. Piperine can change drug levels, so ask a pharmacist before pairing products.

FAQ06
Curcumin absorption questions
Why is curcumin so hard to absorb?
The cited source states the fact but not the reason: a 2 g dose of curcumin alone gave undetectable or very low blood levels in volunteers (AARM, Piperine and curcumin). That is why makers use enhancers or special high-absorption forms.
Is there piperine in Synaptril?
No. The Supplement Facts and other ingredients lists show no piperine or black pepper extract. The turmeric line reads rhizome extract 95% curcuminoids, placed fifth in a 575 mg proprietary blend with the exact amount hidden.
Does piperine interact with medicines?
It can. Piperine affects CYP450 enzymes at doses as low as 20 mg and may raise blood levels of drugs such as phenytoin, propranolol and theophylline (AARM, Piperine and curcumin). Ask your pharmacist before combining it with prescriptions.
What is a high-bioavailability curcumin product?
It is a form made to reach the blood more readily. NCCIH notes that some people taking such products have had liver damage (NCCIH, Turmeric). The 2018 memory trial used one specific form, Theracurmin (Small 2018, Curcumin memory RCT).
Can turmeric supplements harm the liver?
Rarely, yes. LiverTox calls turmeric the most common cause of herbal liver injury in the US, at roughly 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 people exposed, usually after 1 to 4 months (LiverTox, Turmeric).
Should I take turmeric with food?
The label sets no food rule, and our sources do not say how food affects this extract. If it upsets your stomach, NCCIH lists nausea and reflux as possible effects (NCCIH, Turmeric). Ask a pharmacist for advice.
