Ubiquinone vs Ubiquinol: Which CoQ10 Form?
Ubiquinone vs ubiquinol is a choice between two forms of coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinol is the reduced form, and ubiquinone is the oxidized one. Synaptril prints "coenzyme Q10 (as ubiquinone)". Our sources do not show that either form works better for thinking.

The short answer01
What is the difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol?
Ubiquinone and ubiquinol are the two chemical states of coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone is the oxidized state. Ubiquinol is the reduced state.
Your body can switch between them. Supplements are sold in either form.
The Synaptril label says coenzyme Q10 "as ubiquinone". It is last in the blend, so it holds at most 96 mg of 575 mg. A generous case, with magnesium glycinate at 20% magnesium, caps it near 35 mg.
Side by side02
How do the two CoQ10 forms compare?
The sources we can cite do not rank the two. A fair comparison sticks to what the label and reviews say.
| Point | Ubiquinone | Ubiquinol |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical state | Oxidized | Reduced |
| On the Synaptril label | Yes | No |
| Better absorbed | Not shown in our sources | Not shown in our sources |

The research03
Does either form help thinking?
Results are mixed. A 2025 review found eight human trials of CoQ10 and cognition: four reported a benefit and others found none (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition).
The authors blame differences in testing methods and in how well each preparation is absorbed, and say more research is needed (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition). Only two trials were in healthy people.
NCCIH's CoQ10 page does not discuss memory or cognition (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Our sources show no memory benefit for ubiquinone or ubiquinol.

What cautions apply to CoQ10?
CoQ10 can interact with warfarin, in either form. It is structurally similar to vitamin K and may counteract the blood thinner (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
- It may also interact with insulin (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).
- Its antioxidant action may make chemotherapy and radiation less effective (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
- Side effects include sleeplessness, nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
- Statins can lower the body's own CoQ10 (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10).
Never stop warfarin, a statin or any prescription because of a supplement. Ask your prescriber first.

How should you read a CoQ10 line on a label?
Check the form, the milligrams and whether the amount is hidden in a blend. A hidden amount cannot be compared with any trial.
More on the line is in the coenzyme Q10 page and the ingredient overview.
FAQ06
Ubiquinone and ubiquinol questions
Is Synaptril made with ubiquinol?
No. The label prints coenzyme Q10 as ubiquinone. Ubiquinol does not appear in the Supplement Facts or the other ingredients list. The amount is hidden in a 575 mg proprietary blend, where CoQ10 sits last.
Is ubiquinol absorbed better than ubiquinone?
Our sources do not say. The 2025 review only notes that differences in CoQ10 preparations and their bioavailability may explain mixed trial results (Nankivell 2025, CoQ10 and cognition). Any firm claim of a winner should come with a study you can read.
Does CoQ10 interact with warfarin?
It may. MSKCC says CoQ10 is structurally similar to vitamin K and may counteract warfarin (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10), and NCCIH agrees on the interaction (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Do not change a blood thinner yourself; ask the prescriber.
Do statins lower CoQ10?
Yes, statins can lower the body's own CoQ10 levels (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10). NCCIH says the overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for statin-related muscle pain (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Keep taking your statin and discuss muscle pain with your doctor.
What is the price difference between the two forms?
This desk has no verified price comparison, so it gives none. Check each product's CoQ10 milligrams per capsule and the cost per day. Synaptril's own packs run from $49 to $89 a bottle, with CoQ10 as one of seven lines.
Can CoQ10 cause side effects?
Mild ones, yes. MSKCC lists sleeplessness, nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10), and NCCIH reports insomnia and digestive upset with no serious effects reported (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10). Tell a provider if symptoms linger.
